Consultation has concluded

As part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving recreation facilities for the community, we are working with the State Government’s, Open Space and Parkland Team to install an inclusive play space in South Windsor.

Under the “Everyone Can Play” grants program Council received $500,000 to design and install a unique play space which aims to create an environment for all ages and abilities to interact and engage in a safe space.

To date Council has engaged a specialist play space consultant to create a design that satisfies the “Everyone Can Play” guidelines, reflects the needs of the South Windsor community and its environment.

To date the consultant has held consultation sessions with School groups, users of the park, and users of Oasis Aquatic and Leisure Centre located opposite the park.

The results of this consultation has led to the development of the current concepts. Council is now we seek further feedback from the community.

The design showcased here reflects a number of elements of the surrounding area including:

  • Water and sand play with Rickaby’s Creek meandering through South Windsor

  • Indigenous elements of the yarning circle, native planting and local fauna sculptures to reflect our indigenous culture and population

  • Old church ruins and headstones which are a link to the many small cemeteries that dot the South Windsor and Windsor area and European past.

  • Old Town Square reflect our community meeting place where exchanges of ideas took place, food stalls connected the community, with the soap box, shop front and wheelbarrow

  • Council will also be working with the local school to design and build a welcome statement that reflects what children feel is important to the community which will be installed at the main entrance to the park.

The play elements that have been included in the initial design cater for a different abilities, ages and levels of imagination:

  • Water and sand play both equally accessible for all abilities

  • Accessible double flying fox

  • Giant mouse wheel, to burn off a bit of energy

  • Climbing frame

  • Accessible carousel

  • Four person swing, accessible and toddler friendly

  • In addition plenty of seating and shade trees to improve the nature of the space for parents and carers

Council are asking the community for feedback on the initial design. Comments can be made via our Feedback Survey over the next month, until to Friday, 18 January.
